When you decide to become a Bloomhill Respite Volunteer, you know that you will be trained to be fully qualified to provide a support for people facing up to a life threatening illness. Helping people to overcome a major crisis in their life can be one of the most rewarding things you can ever do.

"It just doesn't feel like work". Helping out in a Bloomhill Op Shop can be such a rewarding and happy experience. Your day is filled with meeting the most interesting people and everything you sell is helping Bloomhill to care for local people facing life threatening illness.

Volunteer Position Description

Reporting Relationship:

Volunteers are directly responsible to the Manager Volunteer Services and ultimately the Bloomhill Management Committee.

Role:

Volunteers are responsible for providing support in the form of care and companionship, as well as practical assistance in the form of transport and or basic house keeping duties, to members of the community facing cancer and other life challenging illness, to their families and friends, from the time of diagnosis onwards. Volunteers also provide support to Bloomhill administration, maintenance and gardening for the Bloomhill site. Also volunteers are an integral part of the running of each Op Shop; duties are of a retail nature.

The Person:

Volunteers are members of the community who contribute their time, energy and skills to helping at Bloomhill Cancer Help. Palliative Care trained volunteers are at least 18 years of age, have not experienced a major personal bereavement within the past 12 months and can make a commitment of a minimum of four hours per week for at least 12 months.

Selection Criteria:

  • Capacity to support and care for members of the community facing cancer and other life challenging illness, their families and friends, whilst maintaining their own health and well-being.
  • Ability to accept individuals, their personal choices and specific approach to their care needs, irrespective of race, gender, age, political beliefs, spiritual beliefs or sexual preferences.
  • Commitment to confidentiality.
  • Ability to communicate with others
  • Ability to understand instruction and carry out tasks as directed, at an appropriate level of skill and duty of care.
  • Ability to be available on a regular basis.
  • Ability to operate in a flexible manner, both individually and as a team member.
  • Sense of humour.
  • Desire to serve others.

Volunteer Positions

Housekeepers

We are very keen to hear from volunteers who enjoy home duties and would like to assist Bloomhill in the day to day tasks of making the centre welcoming and an enjoyable place to come too. There are vacancies through out the week for am and pm shifts with a multitude of tasks to deep you interested and fulfilled.

Maintenance & Garden

We are keen to hear from you if you have some spare time to support Bloomhill helping out with maintenance and garden duties. There are vacancies on Monday and Tuesday morning from 7am till midday and Thursday morning 7am till midday. Please contact the Volunteer Coordinator (Alex) on 07 5445 5794.

Office Duties

We are keen to hear from you if you have an office background that includes phone and reception duties in a busy environment. You will need to commit to a roster of at least four hours a week that runs in two shifts from 8.30am to 12.30pm or 12.30pm to 4.30pm. There will be an initial interview followed by on job training. Successful applicants will be then offered fill in shifts that may lead to an ongoing volunteer roster position.
