Diane Fingleton

Resilience

Diane recently retired from her position as Magistrate at Caloundra where she worked from September 2005 after earlier resigning her job as Queensland Chief Magistrate.  It was while she was Chief Magistrate that she was prosecuted and jailed for 6 months on a charge that the High Court of Australia later unanimously threw out, saying there was no legal basis whatsoever for the prosecution that had been taken against her.

Diane grew up in a large family in Brisbane, parts of her early life being shown in the movie 'Swimming Upstream' released in 1992, based on the book of the same name she co-authored with her brother Tony.

She had a distinguished career in Government and Law before her appointment to the Magistrates Court in 1995.  She has always been an activist and advocate on social justice issues -she introducted the first Murri Courts to Brisbane where Indigenous Elders sat with
Magistrates to deal with cases against indigenous defendants.

Diane's personal journey has given her some unique perspectives into what is involved in developing strengths and self awareness in the face of great adversity and challenge.

Come and hear Di speak about this when she comes to Bloomhill.

$5.00  per person - Including morning tea

Event Description
Bloomhill Blokes

Bloomhill Blokes is an initiative of Bloomhill Cancer an effort to support men on the Sunshine Coast who are in some way affected by cancer.  The incidence of cancer amongst men is very confronting with 1 in 2 men, and 1 in 3 women, experiencing some form of cancer during their lifetime.  Men may find themselves caring for someone else with cancer, whether it be their partner, parent or child. Men also give much of the emotional and financial support needed to help people with cancer.

If you are a bloke, and in any way connected with Bloomhill, then 'Bloomhill Blokes' is for you! Whether you are client, carer, survivor, staff member, volunteer or financial supporter, you are a 'Bloomhill Bloke' and more than welcome.  Another aim of the blokes is for some of us to raise funds from time to time as needed.

This will be a fairly unstructured gathering, around a Bar-B-Que and a few beverages on a Friday afternoon, once a month.  Whilst this is not a support group, we trust there will be plenty of support to be found.

Join us for the inaugural meeting of 'Bloomhill Blokes' on Friday 3rd September from 3pm till 5pm, for a traditional Australian Friday afternoon, down tools, bloke gathering.  We will be outside the shed at Bloomhill Cancer Help, 58 Ballinger Road, Buderim.  Bookings not essential, but let us know you are coming if you can, just for the catering (BYO drinks).

Look forward to welcoming you to Bloomhill Blokes.
