AS THE lead singer of Girl Friday, Michele and her band will continue an annual tradition of enthralling guests as they present Jazz & Shiraz on Sunday, August 9, 2020.

“Our band loves contributing to this annual event; we get a sense of the wonderful supportive community that is Bloomhill. It’s a pleasure to play for people who are happy to have a great time together. The afternoon creates a lovely vibe. People don’t just sit around quietly. They’re there to have a good time which is exactly what they do and we love that.”

Likened to such greats as Aretha Franklin and Ella Fitzgerald, Michele G found an affinity with Bloomhill Cancer Care that has continued to flourish.

Michele was living and working overseas when she received news that her father who lives in Brisbane had been diagnosed with cancer.

“That was 13 years ago,” she recalled like it was only yesterday. “Dad was diagnosed with colon cancer and very soon was having emergency surgery. Intravenous chemotherapy followed but unfortunately that didn’t work well for him so he went on to chemo in tablet form. Six months later and he was doing well. Regular check-ups became the new norm and he continues to do well. Actually if you didn’t know he’d had cancer, you wouldn’t know. He and mum are great and enjoying life.”

Michele didn’t come across Bloomhill; our delightful Amanda Hamilton searched out Michele. Girl Friday were playing at the Queensland Air Museum in Caloundra in 2017 when they first met.

“Amanda was at the event and during one of our breaks she introduced herself. Apart from explaining what Bloomhill does, she was also excited to tell me they were looking to present a jazz event.

“Since my dad’s experience I’ve identified with the challenges cancer brings to sufferers and their families. Also, further cancer research is so important and necessary.

“Of course we were happy to be involved with Jazz & Shiraz and help out. The boys and I were also pleased to donate $5 from the sale of our CDs at this event directly to Bloomhill. We’ll continue this with our next CD ‘Blue No More’ which will be released soon.”

With a long-held passion for singing and performing, Michele has performed a variety of genres from chamber choirs in Europe to hard rock in the UK.

For now though, jazz, blues and swing is drawing the crowds and along with Calvin, Logan and Peter, Girl Friday look forward to entertaining the Bloomhill community at the next Jazz & Shiraz on August 9.
