Val first heard about Bloomhill last year. The community that is Bloomhill has become part of her life and one she is grateful for being a part of.

As a concierge I do and go wherever needed which is generally between the kitchen and laundry. In reality we bring what we do at home to here and try to oblige everyone.

I love the way Bloomhill’s focus is the clients, ensuring everything possible is being done for them.

It seems strange now to think that previously I didn’t know anything about Bloomhill and all that they do.

A friend told me about the Bloomhill cafe. At the time I was working full time doing community support work and one day when at Maroochydore I saw one of our Op shops.  I asked for information about volunteer work, got back to my car and immediately phoned Alex. That afternoon I had an interview and everything just fell into place.

First and foremost I was impressed with how Bloomhill is so well-managed. It felt right for me to be here.

No two days are ever the same. Some days are quiet and others can be hectic. Last week we had a booking of 30 in the café plus people from yoga. That’s when our team work comes in to play. If the cafeteria staff need items heated up we’ll do it. Likewise if we need help with washing up and they are having a spell, they jump in and help us out.

This is the only place I’ve done volunteer work and I love it. In turn, I receive so much out of it and look forward to coming in. We have many café regulars; whether clients or others just coming in for a coffee, it all adds up to a welcome sense of community.

It’s amazing how quickly word is getting out and since we put up a sandwich board at the entry on Ballinger Road we’ve been busier at the café and kitchen.

The people I work with all get on well together. Occasionally we plan a get together. Something simple with everyone bringing something for a barbecue. In many ways we are all different, but we all have a good sense of humour.

The week I had my interview, my husband had health issues and I often think to myself that thank goodness I wasn’t working full time. The two days I am here is a nice change. It brings balance to my life.

I see myself here with Bloomhill for some time. It’s like a breath of fresh air.

Last word. What motto do you live by?

“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. This quote resonates with me because I don’t like bullies as such or people being denigrated. I always tell my daughters – do what your conscience tells you.”
