It takes a village to care for people living with cancer This week we recognised Alex Bert, our amazing Community Services Manager (pictured), who leads our fabulous volunteering community at Bloomhill Cancer Care. November 5 was International Volunteer Managers' Day - a day which recognises the outstanding efforts of thousands of Volunteer Managers around the world. 2019 marks the 20th year that this significant day has been celebrated world-wide. Dedicated Volunteer Managers recruit, train, manage, support and retain a strong, effective volunteer workforce that advances the mission of their organisation. They turn dedication and passion for a cause into effective, transformative action. We want to highlight Alex for her passion and dedication to the task of managing our 450+ Bloomhill volunteers. Alex is our longest serving staff member and has seen huge growth and change in the needs of both our clients and volunteers in her 6 plus years with our community inspired charity. "Until you take the time to visit Bloomhill and see how we operate, it is hard to comprehend just how extraordinary our business model is. Our village of volunteers work tirelessly alongside our fabulous nurses and allied health professionals - to offer a level of care and support to people living with cancer you won't find elsewhere." shares Alex. Bloomhill volunteers contribute in so many ways. Whether it be providing buddy support or shopping assistance, child minding while clients receive treatment, reception duties at our Wellness Centre, running our on-site cafe - including barista and cooking duties, concierge, gardening and maintenance of our beautiful grounds, logistical support to the Cotton Tree Markets, helping at our Op shops and Distribution Centre, driving clients within our transport services, general administration support, supporting our signature events and fundraising activities, jewellery sorting for the op shops and a variety of other supporting roles as required - ALL of our volunteers provide a critical role in the success of our organisation. In the last financial year over 92,000 hours were volunteered throughout Bloomhill, equating to more than $2.3 million in value. How amazing is that?! Of course, Alex will be the first to tell you, that these hours don't reflect the countless additional hours of undocumented volunteer time and in-kind support and expertise that Bloomhill continues to receive from individuals and businesses within our community. It truly does take a village to do what we do at Bloomhill. There have been so many achievements in this past financial year and there is a lot to acknowledge and be proud of! Below is just a snap shot of what it takes to care for our community. However, you can read more about the amazing impact our volunteers have on the lives of our clients, their families and their carers in our 2019 Bloomhill Annual Review. Alex, we thank you for your friendship, guidance and leadership - and your tireless passion and commitment towards our cause to support people of all ages to live well with cancer. Bloomhill is always on the look out for new volunteers, if you feel you'd love to get involved, please contact Alex at the Centre on 5445 5794 extension 510 to arrange an interview to find out more.
